Last time we went through the songs that are essential to getting through every shitty break-up. This week, I wanted to focus on the happy, lovey-dovey, summery songs that we can listen to with the windows down day dreaming about our newly budding relationships.

After taking a lot of time to be single after my last break-up (being single became a part of my identity– and I loved it) I found myself falling for someone who I never would have expected to come into my life at that time. While I was absolutely terrified at first, I knew I couldn’t let my fear get in the way of experiencing something truly great– something that not only makes me feel amazing and loved, but is teaching me so many things about love, relationships, and life. I didn’t know a true and healthy relationship until I entered one.

Finding new love at any time is exciting, but there’s something about a new relationship forming right at the brink of spring, with all of the excitement of summer building up. Here are the songs I find myself listening to when I want to daydream about my mans:

“Butterflies” – Kacey Musgraves

“Now you’re lifting me up, ‘stead of holding me down // Stealing my heart, ‘stead of stealing my crown // Untangled all the strings, round my wings, that were tied…”

Winner of the 2019 Grammy Album of the Year, Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour holds a range of beautifully written song centered around her journey with her now husband. She wrote this one shortly after she met him. I feel like this song really captures what I said above: you really don’t know what a healthy relationship is until you’re in one. My boyfriend shares my love for this album, and even painted me a cute little picture of butterflies and lyrics from this song <3

“Love Is Looking for You” – Miranda Lambert

You can’t love yourself at the expense of someone else // You can’t hide a liar from the truth // Love is looking for you…”

For the 2000s country flavor in this week’s playlist, this little tune comes from Miranda’s very first album released in 2005. I love this one because it tells the story of loving yourself after a heartbreak and being ready to put yourself back out there. The most important part of starting something with someone new, is fully knowing you’re able to give someone the parts of you that you spent so much time repairing after the last heartbreak.

“Rosebud” – The Skinny Limbs

Her and I growing closer // Growing close as the rosebuds // And throughout your garden love, a scent of the growing lush…”

Alright so yeah, first things first– this is my boyfriend’s band, so my reasons for listening to this beachy love song were amplified by 100,000%. If you’re looking for all things summer: driving with your hand hanging out the window, walking on a boardwalk eating delicious fried food while watching the sunset with the person you’re falling for…this is it. This song is guaranteed to make you daydream about being in a vintage-inspired beachy music video. Now go check out the rest of their stuff on your streaming service of choice and come to a show with me.

“Loving Is Easy” – Rex Orange County

“Loving is easy // When everything’s perfect // Please don’t change a single little thing for me…”

This song feels exactly how you would expect it to: easy. When I first discovered this song, I listened to it so many times that it ended up being #3 on my most played songs of the year. Yep, it’s that addicting. It’s like serotonin is being transferred from your ears directly into your brain. Even if this is you and your significant other’s song and you break-up, you’ll still feel happy listening to it. That’s all I have to say about this one.

“Countdown” – Beyoncé

Oh, killing me softly and I’m still falling // Still the one I need, I will always be with you // Oh, you got me all gone, don’t ever let me go // Say it real loud if you fly

// If you leave me, you’re out of your mind…”

The new Netflix special has reminded me of this dancing-in-the-mirror song. It’s like yeah, I really like you, but if you leave me then I’ll eventually  be fine and you’re just stupid. Keep that attitude ladies. *cue my boyfriend rolling his eyes and making a Chris D’elia reference*

“September” – Earth, Wind & Fire

Do you remember the 21st night of September? // Love was changing the minds of pretenders // While chasing the clouds away…”

I could be in a dead sleep at 2 a.m. but if this song comes on I’m getting up and singing into a hairbrush microphone. This is just a happy ass song, so obviously you’d want to listen to it when you’re happy af starting a new relationship. Funny story though… Taylor Swift did a cover of this song, and I listened to it for a while and got used to how she changed the date to the 28th of September for her and her boyfriend’s anniversary…I started singing that during my gigs and people were probably like…um dumbass?  It’s fine.

“Love By Mistake” – Bad Suns

“Summer breeze, dancing trees by the lake // Telling me about your latest heartache //With sudden ease, we laugh it off as it begins to rain // I feel it…”

So airy and bright. When I mentioned writing this post, my boyfriend said this is his song he likes to listen to during this new love period. Between Christo Bowman’s milky smooth vocals, the light and perfect harmonies matched with a bouncy guitar riff…it’s the perfect summer tune to kick off your fresh relationship.

“Fresh Eyes” – Andy Grammer

“So suddenly I’m in love with a stranger // I can’t believe that she’s mine // Now all I see is you with fresh eyes, fresh eyes…”

This song is actually about people who have been in a relationship for a while but are finding a new spark, but I still like to think of it as a fresh start kind of song. I didn’t think I’d ever give Andy Grammer a chance after “Honey, I’m Good” but this song is his redemption for me.

“You Are In Love” – Taylor Swift

“One night he wakes, strange look on his face // Pauses, then says, you’re my best friend // And you knew what it was, he is in love…”

This one is for when you’re getting a little more comfortable and serious in the relationship. I can’t lie, I slept on this one for a while…but the lyrics are so beautifully honest about each stage in a relationship. This one feels like a night drive after a really good, really long day together. There’s no one better than Miss Swift as describing the fails and successes of love.
