Hello Babes,

Today it was released that fashion designer, Kate Spade, was found dead in her New York apartment. Some may wonder what the cause of death was for this colorful human, but surprisingly, it was suicide. How can someone who promotes a bright, playful and happy brand be so depressed!?

That’s why I am writing this post.

Just because someone has it all on the surface does not mean they are happy. This tragedy is just a reminder of how mental illness may not always be noticeable at the topical level, but deep down can destroy someone to the point of suicide. The brand Kate created was revolved around bright, colorful and playful messaging and clothing. Kate Spade not only created an iconic brand but she also became a role model for women everywhere. Her cheeky and bold personality was embodied by the brand itself. She was a strong influence on women in fashion.

Mental Illness is no longer just a buzzword on the internet. It’s a serious issue that is sweeping the nation.

The reason I chose to write about this sad topic is because I think it is important to realize that even the most successful people and our biggest role models can struggle too. Mental illness is not restricted to the average person, anyone and everyone can suffer from it. Kate Spade is one of my favorite designers and I actually worked for the Kate Spade store last year; I hold the brand close to my heart.

We need to gain more awareness on this increasing issue. The world is becoming increasingly judgmental; we’re held to impossible standards and the pressure from society can be damaging. Everyday we consume endless amounts of content that can inspire us, motivate us, depress us and overall, impact our lives. Things are changing in our world and mental illness is on the rise. We must take notice and we must adjust.

The Facts:

  • 90% of those who died from suicide suffered from mental illness
  • One in five of every adult in America, suffers from some sort of mental illness
  • 10 million adults (1 in 25) live with serious mental illness
  • 56% of adults with mental illness did not receive treatment

I want people to know it’s okay to have a mental illness but it’s not okay to ignore it. Your feelings are valid and there are options for you. You’re not alone in this world, even if it feels like it. I also want people to know that you can “have it all” in life and still be depressed or unhappy. Money and fame truly does not buy happiness.

On top of becoming more educated on mental illness, we need to become more kind and compassionate. We need to judge others less and realize everyone is fighting their own battle, a battle we know nothing about. We need to encourage positivity and confidence in those around us. Life is too precious to be lost through suicide. We are all strong, but sometimes we forget that when things get tough. Let’s remind each other of our greatness and strength. You are enough!

This Friday, I will be running for the One in Five Marathon Relay in support of Mental Health and the Hope Network. This event is raising money and awareness for mental illness in West Michigan. I will be running to represent my struggle with mental illness and help bring attention to the increasing issue in our country. If you’d like to donate or join the race, click here.

Kate Spade will always be one of my role models, as well as an icon for other women. Rest in Peace, KS.

xo, Lyss
