I hate the phrase, “choose happiness.” Depression and anxiety are not a choice, and you cannot simply choose to be in a good mood. If I could, I totally would! You can, however, choose to think positively. Positive thoughts throughout the day are so important to combat any negativity that is thrown your way! Just taking a minute to focus on what you’re grateful for, or to list things you’ve accomplished can change your mindset and brighten your mood. While you cannot choose your mood, you have the power to control the thoughts in your brain! Of course, thinking positively when you’re feeling low can be difficult, so here are 15 journal prompts to help you focus on happy things:

  1. List your favorite tastes.
  2. List your favorite smells.
  3. What are five things you accomplished this week? Don’t forget to count the little wins!
  4. What is something you’re looking forward to next week? Next month? Next year?
  5. What motivates you to keep going?
  6. List things you’re grateful for. Write down as many as you can think of!
  7. What are three things you like about yourself physically?
  8. What are three things you like about yourself as a person?
  9. What is something you’re most proud of?
  10. What is something you’re looking forward to?
  11. List people you’re happy to have in your life.
  12. List some happy thoughts (ex: puppies exist, or otters hold hands when they sleep).
  13. Imagine your perfect day, and write about what it would look like.
  14. What are three things you’re good at?
  15. What do you love about your pet(s)?
